Pune Smart City Development Corporation (PSCDCL) ready to launch “Public Bicycle Sharing System” in association with Zoomcar’s (PEDL) and OFO

Nov 29, 2017

In keeping with the mandate articulated in the Smart Cities Mission, Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL) in association with Zoomcar’s (PEDL) and OFO willcarry out a pilot trial of public bicycle sharing in Aundh and SavitribaiPhule Pune University to begin with. Incidentally, Aundh-Baner-Balewaadi (ABB) is the area slated for redevelopment in the Pune Smart City Plan which was prepared after extensive consultation with citizens and other stakeholders. This pilot will help citizens get a feel of public bicycle sharing and with their feedback will later on be rolled out in other areas including helping PSCDCL and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to plan for a pan city rollout of this much required public bicycle sharing in the city of Pune. Deploying dockless technology and provision for e-payments through a mobile app, this pilot is being tried out at almost no cost to the citizens. Provision is also being made to have designated areas in Aundh and SavitribaiPhule Pune University for collection of parking of the cycles. Two companies, namely Zoomcar’sPEDL and OFO had earlier approached PSCDCL and the launch is likely to happen in December.

Efforts to introduce public bicycle sharing will only complement the other initiatives of PSCDCL as part of the plan which includes placemaking, street redesign etc. among others. PSCDCL has also set aside around Rs. 10 Crore to set up bicycle infrastructure under ABB area which will not only make the city cleaner and greener but also keep Punekars healthy and fit.

No wonder Punekar’s will be excited at the very glance of cycles’ unique features that include custom designed aluminum alloy frames and drum brakes, anti-slip chains, airless solid tyres, and height adjustable seats. These cycles which would focus on local cycle sharing, typically require minimal maintenance. However, if in a few cases, maintenance is required then the same can be reported by the customers through the web/app. Cycles which would be marked as unsafe or damaged would be made unavailable for use. Further the operators shall ensure that all personal data will be processed lawfully in accordance with the data protection legislation.

Speaking on the partnership, Dr. RajendraJagtap, CEO, PSCDCL said, “We are very happy to introduce such unique Public Bicycle sharing system in association with Zoomcar’s (PEDL) and OFO. This eco-friendly as well as people- centric smart initiative will definitely help Pune regain its identity as ‘City of Cycles’.”

“We are soon going to start working with PSCDCL to identify the most popular transit points by considering the demographic distribution of the area and determine the most optimal parking spots.” added Greg Moran, CEO & Co-founder, Zoomcar.
